An earthquake struck near the moutain resort town of Big Bear at 8:49 a.m. Friday.
Its preliminary magnitude was reported at 3.0 at a depth of 4.4 miles. The earthquake was later downgraded to a 2.9.
The epicenter was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey at 4 miles north-northwest of the town of Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains (map). That's about 77 miles east-northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
