Designer Nate Berkus Surprises Santa Clarita Family

Ruiz family gets a new bedroom

Expert designer Nate Berkus surprises the Ruiz family with a free bedroom makeover after sending him an email asking for help.

A Santa Clarita family received a big surprise when Nate, from NBC's "The Nate Berkus Show," rang the doorbell with the prize of a bedroom makeover.

"We downsized from a 2400-square-foot home to a 1400-square-foot home," said Christy Ruiz who e-mailed Nate asking for help with her master bedroom. "Our old home had this humungous palatial bedroom with a master retreat and now we have a little box."

Berkus and his team of interior designers arrived to ease her troubles with the three-day bedroom makeover.

"I just had to scream because it was beyond my expectations," said Ruiz about when Berkus and his camera crew showed up on her doorstep.

Berkus transformed the entire bedroom into a relaxing oasis

He first selected a grey-blue colored paint to give the room an ocean feel.

"Anything found at the sea shore is typically very relaxing," said Berkus.

The second problem Berkus tackled was the lack of space.

"Quick tips for anybody in a small space: one, lose the headboard and foot board. You have to lose it. Do an upholstered head board," said Berkus. "Two, think about areas where you can put a nice moment. For instance, a desk positioned in front of the window allows Christy to watch the kids play in the front yard, but she can also sit and write notes, read a book, do any of the things she needs to do," said Berkus.

His biggest tip: you don't have to spend a lot of money to make big changes.

"Go in that linen closet, dig through it, pull out that comforter you haven't used in two years and pair it up with a new set of solid sheets that you can pick up on your way home from work," said Berkus. "It's the little changes that gradually make a home feel loved and well lived and lived in."

As for Christy, she's ready to take on the rest of the home: "It seems like a sense of relief that we got one room completely done and finished."

The entire transformation will air during season two of 'The Nate Berkus Show." It premieres Sept. 12 on NBC4.
