A family dispute turned deadly in Beverly Grove on Friday after one man shot and killed his brother. Robert Kovacik reports for NBC4 at 11 p.m. on March 7, 2025.

A 58-year-old man shot and killed his older brother after he was seen choking their mother in her Beverly Grove home on Friday, police said.

Los Angeles police officers arrived at the home in the 400 block of North Alfred Street around 1:30 p.m. after reports of shots fired, said the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to LAPD, the family dispute started between an 80-year-old mother and her 61-year-old son when he allegedly threatened or hit her with a baseball bat. The mother eventually managed to call her younger son.

When the younger son arrived at the home, he saw his brother choking his mother to the ground, LAPD said. He then fired a single shot in the air, but the choking continued, leading to the man turning the gun on his brother.

LAPD said the shooting suspect was taken into custody but will most likely be released because the shooting was not a criminal homicide but a “justifiable” one that saved his mother's life.

The mother was identified by neighbors as Tracey Shrier, founder of Trashey Lingerie.
