Fire Chars Commercial Building in Los Angeles

It took 96 Los Angeles firefighters 29 minutes to put out flames from a greater-alarm fire in an 89-year-old single-story commercial building early Friday, a department spokesman said.

They were dispatched at 12:56 a.m. to the 6,210-square-foot structure, built in 1924, at 5973 S. Figueroa St., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

It took 29 minutes to put out the blaze, Humphrey said. Flames were showing when firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported, he said.

"The cause is under investigation yet appears to be accidental," Humphrey said. The loss was estimated at $200,000.
