SoCal Gas crews capped a major gas leak that prompted evacuations near the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica Monday.
The Santa Monica Police Department announced about 3:50 p.m. that officers and Santa Monica Fire Department firefighters were called to the 200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard due to a ruptured gas main in the area.
Officers evacuated pedestrians in the 200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard and 1300 and 1400 blocks of Third Street Promenade as SoCalGas teams were called to cap the leak.
No injuries were reported, but streets in the area were closed for more than four hours as crews worked to repair the leak.

The SMFD announced about 8:15 p.m. that the leak was repaired and service was being restored to the area. Streets were also reopened, and businesses and residences nearby were deemed safe for people to reenter.
It was not immediately known what caused the gas main to leak.
