High-Speed Chase Ends When Driver Takes Dead-End Street

The chase traveled about 60 miles from Rancho Cucamonga to Encino

A dangerous pursuit that barreled down freeways and surface streets ended in Encino Friday night when the driver turned onto a dead-end street and was surrounded by gun-wielding officers.

Traveling at speeds up to 100 mph, the driver weaved through traffic, narrowly missing other motorists, as he fled from pursuing officers on multiple freeways.

The chase started about 9:25 p.m. in Rancho Cucamonga, some 60 miles east of where it ended.

Deputies in the San Bernardino County city tried to stop the driver at a Walmart shopping center off Foothill Boulevard and Interstate 15 in connection with reports that someone was stealing merchandise inside the store.

When deputies tried to stop the driver, who was already in the SUV, he fled onto the 210 Freeway and headed west, according to a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

She said the driver was a parolee-at-large and the car he was driving had been reported stolen.

The black SUV appeared to have sustained damage to the right rear side, perhaps from a failed PIT manuever meant to stop him from fleeing farther.

After taking at least four freeways -- the 210, 134 and 101 --, the driver exited the freeway at Burbank Boulevard in Encino and drove fast down surface streets before turning onto a dead-end street. Two squad cars pinned the car on either side, trapping the driver in the cul-de-sac, pictured below.

Within moments, the driver surrendered, spread-eagle on the ground. He was taken into custody without incident.
