La Puente High School Student Injured in Stabbing

The incident -- an altercation between two students -- took place just before 3 p.m. at Bassett High School

A La Puente high school student was stabbed three times after an altercation with another student Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident, which left one student stabbed in the face, neck and chest, took place just before 3 p.m. at Bassett High School, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The injured student was taken to County+USC Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He was in stable condition.

Authorities were still looking for the suspect.

The two male students who were involved were age 16 and 17, and both were believed to be in 11th grade.

Bassett Unified School District Superintendent Martin Galindo said that the two students had been involved in a "verbal altercation" on Tuesday but did not alter school officials. He said he was unaware of any gang connection the students might have had.

"After dismissal today, as students were leaving, the two male students started fighting, and one student pulled knife and stabbed the other student on the cheek," Galindo said. "The perpetrator started running."

The stabbing happened with school security and administrators nearby, he said.

"We are surprised that this would happen with everyone around,” Galindo said.

The school planned send information on the stabbing to parents on Wednesday evening, and expected to have extra staff from the school district office on campus Thursday.

Wednesday was the third day of school for the campus, which has about 1,200 students.
