The rock’s roll to Carson wasn’t smooth – first getting tangled in some pine trees, then struggling to make a turn. Cary Berglund talks to rock gawkers, who said the trials were a blessing in disguise.
Like a proverbial game of rock, paper, scissors, was it the palm trees, power lines or a concrete island that stopped the 340-ton boulder in its tracks on Wednesday?
No matter, the storied megalith is a little battle weary as it makes its way through the gauntlet of LA’s mean streets.
It's resting Thursday at Avalon Boulevard, just south of Pacific Street, in Carson to regroup and lick its wounds while its handlers clear a path so it can get to its home at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Saturday.
The two-story-tall slab of granite is the museum’s newest exhibit, part of a sculpture called 'Levitated Mass' by artist Michael Heizer.
It has been making a slow journey on a specially created rig made up of three 18-wheelers more than 100 miles from its original location in Riverside.
Gawkers have flocked to the rock, taking pictures, naming it and paying homage by naming “top rock songs.”
They even threw a party to celebrate it in Long Beach.
