LADWP Truck Gets Stuck in Silver Lake Sinkhole

The water main break flooded streets and compromised the road, sending an LADWP truck into a muddy sinkhole.

The back end of a utility truck heading to a broken water main got stuck in a muddy sinkhole on a Silver Lake street Friday morning.

The water main on Robinson Street broke just before 2 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

The water main break soaked and weakened the road, sending an LADWP truck into a muddy sinkhole. A tow truck helped bring the DWP truck up from the sunken road by 6:30 a.m.

DWP officials said the worker wasn't injured but was "just shaken up, obviously."

"Please stay out of the area," said John Cox of the LADWP. "You don't never know what can happen."

Crews shut the water off about 5 a.m. and cut service to about 40 homes for several hours, LADWP spokeswoman Ellen Cheng said. Streets were closed from Marathon Street to Descanso Drive.

"There's going to be a lot of people not showering as they head to work this morning," resident Mark Alvin said.

DWP officials said the 6-inch cast iron pipe was built in 1922.

Two other water main breaks were reported overnight.

One happened in the 2200 block of Cahuenga Boulevard near the Hollywood Hills. Firefighters found water gushing from an 8-inch main about 1:30 a.m. LADWP crews turned off the water but did not say how many homes were affected.

Another main broke at Franklin and Whitney avenues in Hollywood, DWP officials said.
