Commuters heading for downtown Los Angeles Monday could run into some serious traffic headaches, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to descend on the area for the Lakers victory parade and a series of streets closed for the event.
According to the city Department of Transportation, Figueroa Street will be closed between Olympic and Jefferson boulevards beginning at midnight Sunday to make way for the procession, which begins at 11 a.m. and stretches from Staples Center and heads south toward Galen Center.
Other planned road closures are:
- Chick Hearn Court between Figueroa and Cherry streets;
- Cherry Street between Olympic and Pico boulevards;
- Flower Street between Washington and Jefferson boulevards;
- Jefferson between Figueroa and Hoover streets; and
- all intersections along the two-mile route.
Metro officials encouraged Laker fans to use rail lines to get downtown, noting there are Blue Line stations at Pico and Chick Hearn, and at Grand Avenue and Washington Boulevard.
Blue Line trains will run every six minutes throughout the day. More trains will be added to the Red/Purple lines, and service will be bolstered on the Gold Line as needed, according to Metro.
