Students Rally for SoCal Teacher Shot During LAX Rampage

The 29-year-old educator does not have insurance to pay for his unexpected and mounting medical bills

Calabasas High School rallies in support of teacher Brian Ludmer who was injured in the shooting at LAX. Students send a message against gun violence. Gordon Tokumatsu reports from Calabasas for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013.

A Southern California teacher who survived last week’s deadly shooting at LAX is recovering after a bullet shot through his right leg, and his students rallied Tuesday hoping to heal his spirit.

Brian Ludmer was shot Nov. 1 while he stood between a pair of airport security agents in Terminal 3, where a gunman targeting TSA agents opened fire.

“I crawled to safety, applied a tourniquet, and was later found by the police who pulled me out of the building despite great risk to themselves as the shooter was still active at the time,” Ludmer said in a statement.

The 29-year-old teacher at Calabasas High School suffered minimal nerve damage, which means there’s a “good chance” he’ll regain full use of his leg and foot. At least two more surgeries and a metal rod are in his immediate future.

Students rallied at Calabasas High School Tuesday to protest gun violence.

"This is a teachable moment and they want to seize the moment and make something positive and really send a message that says, 'For this generation, this has got to stop,'" said C.J. Foss, prinicipal at Calabasas High School.

Foss said he visited Ludmer in the hospital and said the young educator was "back to himself but there is a deep quiet about him that I think has changed him."

Ludmer has not been working at Calabasas High School long enough to accrue the medical insurance or paid sick days he now needs to recover.

A fundraiser has been set up to pay for Ludmer’s mounting medical bills. Nearly $19,000 of the $100,000 goal had been collected by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
