With 175K Expected, Streets to Shut Down for Long Beach Grand Prix

With more than 175,000 attendees slated to hit Long Beach, race and city officials are closing streets from Wednesday to April 14

With the 40th annual Long Beach Grand Prix tearing around the corner, the city is gearing up for its big race with some major street and walkway closures that will affect residents and visitors throughout the week and into the weekend.

Most of the barricades will start Wednesday and last until April 14 because race officials said they are expecting upward of 175,000 attendees for the week’s festivities.

The three-day event has burgeoned into more than a racing event, as many hotels, restaurants and other local businesses have learned to capitalize on the historic deluge of fans. Race officials have said the event could rake in $30 million to $40 million for Long Beach’s economy.

The race weekend officially kicks off Wednesday with Roar in the Shore, a free event open to the public that will feature a motorcycle stunt show and a racecar showcase. Roar in the Shore will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Belmont Shore, near Second Street (map).

Races begin April 11. Tickets can be purchased at 888-82-SPEED or online.
