Authorities on Saturday were investigating what caused a man to die while in the custody of a Southern California police agency.
It happened Friday before 6 p.m. when officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department were responding to several reports of a man "violently kicking his feet and striking his fists in an uncontrollable manner" while seated in his car in a Burger King parking lot.
When officers arrived, the man appeared agitated, “throwing food, money, and other items inside and outside of the vehicle,” police said in a press release.
After struggling with the man to get him out of the car after several attempts to order him out were not unsuccessful, police handcuffed him and took him into custody.
Shortly thereafter, the man became unresponsive and he stopped breathing, police said.
Police could not resuscitate him and he died at a hospital.
Police were withholding his identity until they could notify family.
