Suspected Car Thief Fatally Shot by Officers in Hemet Neighborhood

A suspected car thief was shot and killed by police in Hemet early Tuesday, detectives said. Annette Arreola reports live for NBC4 News at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016.

An investigation was underway Tuesday morning after a man was shot and killed by officers in Hemet.

Detectives said officers on patrol in east Hemet started chasing the driver of a silver Honda in Hemet around 2 a.m. The car was reported stolen.

The suspected car thief led authorities toward the 40000 block of Sharose Drive where he got out of the car and shot at officers several times before they fired back, detectives told NBC4.

The man died in the neighborhood where the shooting happened.

Residents who live in the neighborhood woke up to find a crime scene outside that blocked off several streets.

"I'm shocked, really because it's really quiet around here," one neighbor Janice Fowler said. "There's mostly older folks."

Riverside County Sheriff's Investigators had spent nearly seven hours processing the scene Tuesday morning, collecting evidence from the Honda they say the man was driving.
