A man was killed Wednesday night when he was shot by police in the Vermont Square neighborhood of South Los Angeles.
The shooting occurred about 9:55 p.m. near the intersection of Figueroa and 111th streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The LAPD said four individuals were in the parking lot at a nearby gas station when a man approached them and pointed a gun at them.
Officers patrolling in the area saw the gunman and victims and stopped to help, according to LAPD. That's when the man failed to comply with officers' orders and they opened fire, authorities said.
The man, identified only as an individual in his 20s or 30s, died at the scene and a firearm was recovered, LAPD said. No officers were injured.
Security and body-worm camera video will be reviewed, police said.

The shooting was one of three reported in the area early Thursday. Deputies opened fire in the Vermont Vista neighborhood, killing a man after a brief pursuit. Another shooting was reported at Chevron gas station, leaving one man dead.
