Man Tries to Poison Wife: Police

A 43-year-old man is in custody after his wife eats poison-laced Rice Krispies

A court hearing is scheduled Tuesday for a man suspected of trying to kill his wife by putting poison in her cereal.

Fernando Porras, 43, of Azusa was being held on Sunday at the Los Angeles County Jail with bail set at $1 million.

Porras faces attempted murder charges in connection with the case involving his 51-year-old wife, Fernanda.

The drama began Thursday when Fernanda Porras noticed a horrible taste and smell in her Rice Krispies, said Azusa police Cpl. Randy Schmidt.

She apparently ate some of it, was sickened and taken to a hospital, police said.

Police grew suspicious of Fernando Porras at the hospital when he told police he was going to go smoke a cigarette and then disappeared.

He was arrested about two miles away. Police allege Porras put a poisonous chemical in the cereal, but they didn't say what it was.
