After a man armed with a shotgun was fatally struck by deputy gunfire in East Los Angeles Saturday, detectives are investigating what led up to the shooting, sheriff's officials said.
The shooting occurred at around 1:22 a.m. in the 900 block of South La Verne Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
"When deputies arrived at the residence they entered to investigate and encountered a man armed with a shotgun," sheriff's officials said in a statement.
A male suspect was struck by deputy gunfire and was taken to a hospital where he later died.
His identity was not immediately released.
No deputies were injured.
It is unknown what led up to the shooting. Deputies initially responded to a call for a gunshot victim. Detectives are working to determine if someone was shot before deputies arrived.
