MLS Gets $10M, Just for Being Nice

Major League Soccer will be paid $10 million for letting David Beckham leave Los Angeles.

Commissioner Don Garber said the league will receive the money for its agreement to extend David Beckham's loan to AC Milan through the end of the season.

The 33-year-old midfielder joined MLS's Los Angeles Galaxy in July 2007 and moved to Milan on a loan in January. That loan was to expire March 8, the sides agreed to extend it through the end of the Italian season.

Beckham will rejoin the Galaxy on July 1.

In other Beckham news, a report in the British tabloid The Sun claims Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur might make a play for Beckham. The Sun reported that Tottenham is willing to spend about $58.7 million this summer.

Goal.com explains the situation:

"It is thought that once the current MLS campaign finishes in October 2009, Beckham may seek another loan move to a European club to boost his chances of making the 2010 World Cup Squad. Tottenham are, allegedly, hoping to persuade 'Golden Balls' to head to White Hart Lane in order to achieve his target."

White Hart Lane is a soccer stadium in Tottenham, England and "Golden Balls" is Beckham's nickname, but if you didn't know that you probably didn't read past Paragraph 2 anyway.
