San Bernardino Police Mourn Officer Who Died in Crash

The crash occurred on the 91 Freeway just west of its interchange with the 15 Freeway

San Bernardino police mourned on Thursday the death of an officer who crashed while riding his motorcycle on a Southern California freeway.

Officer Shaun Jarvis, 30, died after crashing his Harley Davidson while off duty. He was sideswiped in the westbound lanes of the Riverside (91) Freeway in Corona at 9:06 a.m. and thrown over the center divider, police said. He was fatally struck by a car.

"It's a sad day for the San Bernardino Police Department. It's a sad day for our family," police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. "Shaun was a well-respected officer. He was much beloved by his co-workers, and just a generally all-around good guy."

Jarvis, a father of three, joined the San Bernardino Police Department in 2006.

He worked assignments in patrol and on the crime impact team, authorities said.

In January, he was assigned to the Traffic Division as a motor officer, and recently was awarded his motor officer insignia.

"Shaun grew up locally, and it was his life-long dream to be a police officer," the chief said. "This month was his eight-year anniversary with the department. He had come to us as a rookie police officer ... He spent his entire career with us."

Jarvis had a number of awards and commendations. He was recognized for his ability to find stolen cars and he had numerous numerous citizens’ commendations.

"Shaun was kind of one of those guys who had a bit of a baby face and he looked pretty young, but he had a maturity about him," the chief said. " He really had a good career here. He seemed to have a very bright future ahead of him ... Unfortunately this is just a tragic event and very unfortunate."
