Driver in Custody After Lengthy Pursuit of Box Truck

NBC Universal, Inc.

A driver is in custody after taking the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies on a lengthy pursuit through several cities in a box truck Thursday night.

On Thanksgiving night, LASD began a pursuit of a box truck in the Carson area.

The driver led deputies through several cities including Long Beach, Willowbrook, Watts and finally coming to a stop in Compton.

The driver of the box truck would often stop or slow down before speeding up again.

At one point the driver found themselves in a small alley where another driver of a white vehicle was coming the opposite way.

The pursuit driver lunged towards the other vehicle, forcing them to back out of the small one way lane, allowing them to escape and continue the pursuit.

Throughout the pursuit, the driver was seen backing up the vehicle into the deputies behind them and even driving towards a deputy standing outside the patrol car, nearly missing them.

At around 9:45 p.m., white smoke was seen coming from the right side of the vehicle which turned out to be a missing tire.

Sparks were flying from the vehicle driving on the rim after losing the right rear tire.

As the pursuit went on, the driver went into a Target shopping center and later another Walmart shopping center.

The vehicle came to a stop near Atlantic and E. Alondra boulevards outside El Rancho Mobile Home Park in Compton.

The driver remained in the vehicle with the door open and waited for a while before trying to run away.

Deputies caught up and took the driver into custody after about an hour-long pursuit.
