Police Find Pipe Bomb Following Traffic Stop

A traffic stop in a Sunland neighborhood early this morning caused police to call the bomb squad to detonate an explosive device.

The LAPD discovered a pipe bomb inside an SUV during a traffic stop around 3 a.m. Thursday in the 7800 block of Hillrose Street, said Officer Bruce Borihanh, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman.

The bomb squad was called in and blew up the device, police said. There were no injuries were reported.

Officers arrested two suspects in the vehicle but two others ran off.

The pursuit led police into a Sunland neighborhood in a manhunt that prompted officers to evacuate some residents for up to 10 hours as a precaution, police said. Some were not allowed to return until around 9 p.m. Thursday.

One of the suspects was caught and arrested. The investigation is being handled by the LAPD's "Criminal Conspiracy Division."

Police have not identified the suspects or what charges they are being held on.
