Former caregiver accused of crashing minivan into Irvine home and killing paralyzed resident

A police shooting occurred an hour after a person was find dead inside of a home. It was not immediately clear if the two incidents were connected. John Cádiz Klemack reports for the NBC4 News at 6 a.m. on Aug. 5, 2024. 

A man suspected in the killing of a 38-year-old paralyzed Irvine man early Monday after crashing a minivan into a home was identified by authorities as the victim's former caregiver.

Officers responded to a call at around 2:15 a.m. at 33 Whistling Swan where a man was found dead inside a home. The victim with stab wounds was discovered by his caregiver, authorities said.

An SUV had slammed into the garage of the home. As police were looking for the minivan's driver, officers encountered a man, believed to be a suspect in the homicide, near West Yale Loop and Stone Creek and a police shooting occurred. 

The man was shot and transported to the hospital, where he died. A knife was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

"The male suspect appears to be the driver of the minivan that crashed into the home and is believed to have killed the victim," police said in a statement.

He was identified as a 47-year-old Florida man who was the victim's former caregiver, police said.

Details about a motive were not immediately available.
