Police Search for Gunman After LAPD Patrol Car Shot at in South LA

K-9 and SWAT teams ended their search of the scene of an ambush as LAPD detectives continued their search for a person who may have shot at a police squad car. Annette Arreola reports from South LA for Today in LA on Monday, Dec. 29, 2014.

Dozens of police officers swarmed a South Los Angeles neighborhood Sunday night in search of a gunman after an LAPD patrol car was shot at with a rifle, officials said.

The department declared a citywide tactical alert, sending every available officer to the area of 62nd and Hoover streets, LAPD officials said. The alert was later modified, as a search for a second suspect came up empty.

Officers were driving in the area about 9:30 p.m. when their squad car was fired upon by two people, police said.

The officers fired back, but the two people fled. No officers were injured.

One person was arrested in connection with the shooting. Police identified him as 18-year-old Christopher Taylor.

Officers said they recovered the rifle.

As police searched for a second person, the crime scene spanned three blocks, between Vermont Avenue and Hoover Street, and 60th Street and Gage Avenue.

Some 60 officers, a SWAT team and police dogs were involved in the search, officials said.
