An off-duty Inglewood police officer was hospitalized following a shooting Thursday in Lennox, Inglewood's mayor says.
According to law enforcement, the off-duty officer was helping his sister move out, and possibly away from a domestic violence situation, when a man who is believed to be her ex opened fire.
"He was there possibly assisting a family member that could have been a domestic violence, we don’t know if he was aware of it or not, with the family member when he was confronted by the suspect and the suspect produced a handgun," LT. Charles Calderaro with the LA County Sheriff Homicide Bureau said.
It was not clear if the officer shot back at the gunman but one neighbor says she heard two sets of gunshots outside her door.

"When I heard them, I opened my door. That’s when I seen a man on the floor by the gate in front of the apartment," Norma Soto said.
She says she heard a car speed away moments after.
Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts said the officer was in surgery late Thursday morning.

As of Thursday night, the officer was in stable condition.
The officer, who was not in uniform, was shot in the arm and hip, Butts said.
Aerial video showed law enforcement vehicles following an ambulance to a hospital on a freeway. Authorities said a gunshot victim was being transported.
No arrests were reported.
Law enforcement officers from several agencies descended on the area where the shooting was reported. A search was underway in the 11000 block of Osage Avenue, a few blocks south of Lennox Boulevard.
