A shooting involving the Long Beach Police Department was under investigation on Wednesday.

An investigation is underway after the Long Beach Police Department shot and killed a knife-wielding man accused of stabbing a woman on Wednesday.

Officers responded to a stabbing call in the 300 block of 69th Way shortly before 9 a.m., the LBPD said. When police arrived, they confronted a man holding a knife inside a home.

According to Long Beach police, the man refused to drop the knife, prompting officers to open fire.

Police said the man had stabbed a woman he knew prior to the officers’ arrival. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where her injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The suspect, who was identified as 38-year-old Eriberto Penaloza, died at the hospital of his injuries. Police said he was later discovered to have also had stab wounds. It is unclear if those were self-inflicted or were at the hands of another person.

No officers were injured in the confrontation.

As per protocol, Long Beach police will conduct its own investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent investigation, as well.
