Pilot in FA-18 Crash Will Fly Again

The pilot of a military jet that crashed into a San Diego neighborhood and killed four people on the ground has been cleared to fly again.

Officials say Marine Lt. Dan Neubauer will resume flights on probationary status.

The pilot was criticized in a military investigation for his judgments prior to the December 8. crash that also incinerated two homes. But he was not disciplined.

The investigation determined the crash was caused by mechanical failure and a string of bad decisions that led the pilot to bypass a potentially safe landing at a coastal Navy base.

Neubauer was about to finish training and be deployed when he embarked on the fateful flight. He bailed out just before his aircraft hit the ground. His training will resume when he begins flying again, and will probably have to duplicate parts of the course.
