Road of Ruins

Fire, rain, now a lengthy closure for Angeles Crest Highway

It's seen fire and rain, and now geologists are trying to figure out what's next for Angeles Crest Highway.

The mountain road has been through it all during the past few months. First, the Station Fire. Then, downpours and mudslides.

In the short term, a 40-mile stretch east of La Canada-Flintridge will be closed until late March. Anything beyond that involves geologists -- which means there are serious problems.

County spokesman Patrick Chandler said at three sites chunks of asphalt had broken off the road and slid down hillsides. Caltrans geologist Kris Barker said designers were trying to think of creative ways to rebuild the highway.

The road, when it's open, handles about 11,300 motorists per day.
