A Santa Monica College employee was hospitalized in critical condition after she was shot by a coworker Monday night at one of the school's satellite campuses.

The shooting was reported around 9:50 p.m. Monday at the Center of Media & Design at 1600 Stewart St. In a statement, the Santa Monica College Police Department called the shooting a case of workplace violence, not a random crime.

"SMPD believes this is an isolated incident and there is no information suggesting the suspect remains in Santa Monica or is a threat to the community," Santa Monica Police said. "We will be providing extra patrols around our schools today."

Santa Monica Police said the shooter, who was identified as 39-year-old Davon Durell Dean, was also a Santa Monica College employee.

Dean led police on a brief pursuit Tuesday afternoon after his vehicle was spotted in El Segundo. After law enforcement performed a PIT maneuver on his car, a standoff ensued. The ordeal came to an end after officers found Dean died in his vehicle due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

All Santa Monica College campuses were closed Tuesday after the shooting. The school said emotional and metal wellness support would be provided.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call 310-458-8491.
