Santa Monica College employee hospitalized after shooting on campus

The Santa Monica College Police Department said the shooting was a case of workplace violence and not a random act.

A Santa Monica College employee was hospitalized in critical condition following a shooting Monday night at one of the school's satellite campuses.

The shooting was reported around 9:50 p.m. Monday at the Center of Media & Design at 1600 Stewart St. In a statement, the Santa Monica College Police Department called the shooting a case of workplace violence, not a random crime.

Santa Monica Police said the shooter also is a Santa Monica College employee.

No arrests were reported early Tuesday.

"SMPD believes this is an isolated incident and there is no information suggesting the suspect remains in Santa Monica or is a threat to the community," Santa Monica Police said. "We will be providing extra patrols around our schools today."

All Santa Monica College campuses were closed Tuesday after the shooting.
