A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was shot in an arm in Lynwood on Tuesday, and the suspect, who holed up in a nearby apartment, was fatally shot when he tried to flee.
The suspect was shot about 4:15 p.m. as he ran out of an apartment in the 12200 block of South Santa Fe Avenue and declared dead at the scene, officials said.
The standoff started shortly after 1 p.m. when the deputy was wounded. He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center. The 17-year veteran of the department was expected to survive.
What led to the initial shooting was unavailable. Residents said they heard about a dozen gunshots.
Dozens of sheriff's deputies who swarmed the area used a robot to try to knock down the door of the apartment where the suspect was and, when he ran out, he was shot.
