One person is dead and an officer was shot Tuesday evening in north Long Beach following a standoff with an armed man, according to police and Mayor Rex Richardson.
Officers were called to the area of Atlantic Avenue and 52nd Street for a report of a man armed with a gun at about 3:15 p.m. There, police officers sought additional support from a hostage negotiator and mental evaluation team to try to reason with the man.
After all efforts failed, a SWAT team was deployed.

About two hours after initially contacting the man, fire was opened by officers and the suspect, according to police. The man was shot at least once by police officers and one officer was shot in the arm during the exchange. It is unclear who shot first.
The man, whose name has not been released, died at the scene. The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital and is described as being in stable condition, according to police.
"Thankfully, the officer is in stable condition with minor injuries, is in good spirits, and is expected to make a full recovery," Richardson said in a social media post.

As a result of the investigation, Atlantic Avenue has been shut down from 52nd Street to Market Street.
The officer who was shot was not identified. A gun was recovered at the scene.
