A man who shot at a law enforcement helicopter multiple times from the roof of a house in the Compton area Thursday night was shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies.

Deputies were called to the area of Rosecrans and Cahita avenues just before 8 p.m. after someone reported a man with a shotgun. The man was in the rear of a home when deputies arrived and eventually climbed on the roof with the firearm.

A Bearcat tactical vehicle was called to the scene after the man fired multiple times at the deputies, homicide Lt. Steven De Jong said.

"Ultimately, four to six rounds were fired at the helicopter,'' De Jong said at a press conference.

The man reloaded the weapon several times. The helicopter was struck by gunfire at least once, buts returned to base. No deputies were injured.

Deputies shot the man, who died at the scene.
