Officers with the California Highway Patrol were involved in a shooting after a pursuit came to an end in Winnetka early Wednesday. Lauren Coronado reports for the NBC4 News at 6 a.m. on Feb. 26, 2025.

An early morning chase ended in a fatal shooting Wednesday in the San Fernando Valley.

At least one California Highway Patrol officer opened fire when the chase, which began in Northridge, stopped in a Winnetka neighborhood. The driver of the Ford Transit van involved in the pursuit was killed.

The shooting was reported at about 2 a.m. in the 7200 block of Sunny Brae Avenue near Cozycroft Avenue. The CHP told NBCLA the officer opened fire after seeing the man holding a gun, which was later recovered at the scene.

"There was a crash, and I heard officers shouting, 'Get on the ground, get on the ground,'" said witness Stuart Smith. "And then, must have been about, I think, about 16 shots."

Video from a neighbor's security camera captured the sound of multiple shots fired.

Family members identified the driver as a 21-year-old. They said he lived in the area and was driving his father's work van.

No officers were injured.
