Skull Discovered in Griffith Park

A skull was found about 5:35 p.m. Monday by a hiker.

Authorities were investigating the discovery of a human skull in Griffith Park near a steep hiking trail.

Los Angeles police Officer Rosario Herrera said the skull was found about 5:35 p.m. Monday by a hiker. The skull is believed to be that of a man, said Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the coroner's office.

"It does not appear to have been from a person who was recently deceased," LAPD Capt. Bill Murphy told the LA Times. "Because the death is undetermined, the coroner's office will be the lead agency and science will play a key role in determining the cause of death."
