The pursuit of a Maserati driver in southern Los Angeles County ended in gunfire during a confrontation between the driver and police officers Tuesday in a West Adams neighborhood.

The chase began in the Long Beach-San Pedro area after a report of a person wanted for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. The chase continued into Inglewood and View Park, where at least four drivers swerved to avoid the Maserati as it traveled on the wrong side of the a street.

The chase ended when the driver stopped in the parking lot at the rear of an apartment building in West Adams. As the driver walked down the driveway toward the front of the two-story building, where officers had weapons drawn, shots appeared to be fired and the driver fell to the ground.

"The suspect then walked out to the street where he produced two handguns and pointed them at officers, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," the Los Angeles Police Department said, adding the suspect was then struck by gunfire and taken into custody.

The LAPD said firefighter-paramedics treated the driver at the scene and took him to a hospital.

A female bystander, who was caught in the cross fire, was also taken to a hospital where she was treated and listed in stable condition.

Neighbors told NBCLA the man has family members in the area.

Police arrest driver, robbery suspect following pursuit in the South Bay area

"This is just horrible," a woman said while crying.

There were no reports of injuries to officers.

"Thank god no officers were injured," LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said. "But this kind of things shows us just what our officers are facing out there everyday, confronting a suspect is going to do what they have to do to get away."

While the initial call to the police entailed the suspect was following a DASH bus being operated by someone with whom he had been in a relationship, the LAPD said "the exact relationship between the two is unknown at the time."
