Police officers shot and killed a man Saturday night, leading to a roughly 45-minute car chase resulting in a crash that left one officer injured.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the wild ordeal began around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of 65th and Flower Streets. There, a patrol unit with non-uniformed members of LAPD’s Vice division was approached by a man who exited a vehicle.

Authorities said that for reasons still unclear, officers opened fire on the man. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

After the shooting, the occupants of the vehicle that the man exited drove off, instigating a chase.

The driver evaded authorities as they traveled on multiple freeways, ultimately ending the pursuit in the Ontario area. It is unclear how many people were in the car, but police said all occupants of the vehicle were detained.

Early in the pursuit, a police officer crashed near the northbound 110 Freeway by the 51st Street exit. That officer was hospitalized and is described as being in stable condition.
