Three Killed in Local Freeway Crashes Over Holiday Weekend

At least three people have died in freeway traffic accidents so far over the Labor Day weekend throughout Southern California, according to authorities.

The first deadly accident happened at 9:42 p.m. Saturday in Studio City.  A man’s car crashed into a medium on the westbound Ventura (101) Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball.

“He got out of his car and was struck trying to cross eastbound lanes,” said officer Kimball.  He died at the scene.

The second fatality happened on the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway in South Gate at 10:53 p.m. Saturday.  That accident took place when the driver crashed into a power pole and a tree on the Paramount Boulevard off ramp from that freeway, said police. The man driving the car was killed instantly, and a woman in the car was hospitalized, authorities said.

The third fatal crash happened on the Harbor (110) Freeway near 52nd Place in South Los Angeles at 2:40 a.m. That accident involved a two-seater Smart car and a full-size Monte Carlo sedan, officer Kimball said.

Three men were on the right shoulder of the freeway, attempting to repair the broken-down Chevrolet  Monte Carlo, Kimball said. The Smart car driver was in the far right lane and reportedly  swerved to avoid a car that had slowed in front of him.

The impact caused the Monte Carlo to push forward and strike three men  working on the Chevy on the freeway shoulder. One man was trapped under the car and burned to death. Another man,  described as a 47-year-old Wilmington man, suffered major injuries from third  degree burns to his arms and face, as well as a broken pelvis, said L.A. City fire officials.
