300 Toilets Dumped at SoCal Reef

Tires, other garbage found off Malibu coast

Hundreds of toilets, tires and other garbage are being removed from a reef off the coast of Malibu, it was reported this week.

The trash was found about 1 1/2 miles east of Point Dume, and at some points, up to 80 feet deep. The area is home to fish, lobsters and sea urchins, the Discovery Channel reported:

The toilets that are being pulled from the sea are being unloaded in Marina Del Rey where they'll be lifted from a boat to the dock by winch for transport to a landfill.

About 300 tires were also discovered at the site. The person responsible for the trash has yet to be identified.

The Lost Fishing Gear Recovery Project is coordinating the cleanup effort. Since May 2006, the group has helped remove almost 17 tons of gear from that area, Discovery reported.

The Recovery Project is a part of the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center's SeaDoc Society.
