Woman Shot to Death Pulled From Burning Home, Son Dies

Firefighters discovered the body of a gunshot victim in a structure fire in Hawthorne. Officials are investigating the scene as a homicide, and the cause of the fire is unknown. Mekhalo Medina reports for the NBC4 News at 5 on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016.

A woman in her 90s, who was pulled from a burning home Friday in Hawthorne, had been shot to death, according to authorities, who said her son died en route to a hospital.

The blaze was reported at 12:06 p.m. in the 13200 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The sheriff's department reported that the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had been shot.

There was no immediate word on what caused the death of her son, who was reportedly in his 60s, or what sparked the blaze. It took 19 minutes to extinguish the flames, county fire department Inspector Gustavo Medina said.

Hawthorne police were dispatched to the scene and subsequently summoned sheriff's homicide detectives to assist in the investigation into the deaths.
