A Lacsa flight bound for Los Angeles International Airport from Guatemala City along with a flight from LAX to Guatemala City were canceled Thursday due to volcanic activity in the area, airport officials said.
Lacsa Flight 640, scheduled to arrive at 12:05 a.m. Friday and Flight 641, scheduled to depart at 1:40 a.m., were canceled, said Katherine Alvarado of LAX.
Ash from the Pacaya volcano prompted the closure of Guatemala City's La Auroa airport.
The volcano started to erupt a few days ago, the Associated Press reported:
The most active of Guatemala's 32 volcanos, Pacaya has been intermittently erupting since 1966, and tourists frequently visit areas near three lava flows formed in eruptions between 1989 and 1991.
In 1998, the 8,373-foot (2,552-meter) volcano twice spewed plumes of ash, forcing evacuations and shutting down the airport in Guatemala City.
