Firefighters protected nearby structures from a commercial building fire Sunday that sent thick smoke over an area northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
The fire broke out in 90-degree heat and humid conditions at midday near Vineburn Avenue at Valley Boulevard in the El Sereno area and burned for more than 2 1/2 hours. Smoke from the fire just north of the 10 Freeway could be seen from West Los Angeles, according to City News Service.
Crews responded to the building in the historic community at about 11:30 a.m. near the Metrolink railroad tracks. The fire was knocked down at about 2 p.m.
Two Los Angeles firefighters were hospitalized in stable condition, four were treated for injuries at the scene. More than 160 firefighters responded.
The building was identified only as a one story commercial structure. Traffic control officers were sent to the area.
