Man Charged in Marina del Rey Security Guard's Slaying

The security guard's body was found between two cars in the parking lot of the Shores apartments in December 2013

A Southern California man will face charges in the death of a security guard who was shot outside an apartment complex in the seaside community of Marina del Rey last month, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.

Byron Keith Street, 47, of Inglewood, is accused in the slaying of Patrick Odoikyene, 47, of South Los Angeles, who was found dead Dec. 30 between two cars in the parking lot of the Shores apartments (map), officials said.

Street was arrested for an unrelated felony fraud charge by sheriff’s deputies the day after Odoikyene’s body was found, officials said.

After an investigation, Street was charged on Tuesday in connection with the death, which was the first homicide in the upscale community since 2007.

Residents said Odoikyene had moved to South LA from Ghana. They described the victim as well-liked around the complex.

"He was so jovial and friendly," resident Lynn Reynolds said of Odoikyene, pictured. "He couldn't do enough for you. Just a nice big guy, lovable guy."

Street is set to be arraigned Jan. 30 on charges of murder, burglary, felony vandalism and felony possession of a firearm, officials said. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
