A man suspected of stealing a parking enforcement vehicle died after a confrontation with deputies inside a McDonald's restaurant Tuesday morning in San Gabriel.

Investigators responded to the 6900 block of Rosemead Boulevard around 5:30 a.m. after the vehicle theft report and a disturbance at the restaurant. The man took off in the parking enforcement car after striking the parking safety officer in the head, according to authorities.

The man took the parking safety's officer lunch that he found inside the car into the McDonald's and swiped some cookies off the counter, without paying for them. He then sat down and began eating, officials said.

A sheriff's department news released stated the subject was "in contact" with deputies before his death. The man "lunged" at one of the deputies, who surrounded him inside the McDonald's before "taking him to the ground," according to the sheriff's department.

The man was handcuffed and his legs were secured and at some point, he became unresponsive. The man died as he was taken into custody, according to the sheriff's department.
