Horror Icon Sid Haig, Star of Rob Zombie Films, Dies at 80

"Horray for Captain Spaulding. Gone but not forgotten," Rob Zombie wrote

Actor Sid Haig, known for his roles in the Rob Zombie-directed horror films "House of 1,000 Corpses" and "The Devil's Rejects," died on Saturday. He was 80.

According to a statement posted to Haig's Instagram apparently by his wife Susan Oberg, the actor's death on Saturday came as a shock to his family and friends.

"He was my angel, my husband, my best friend and always will be," the statement said. "He adored his family, his friends and his fans. This came as a shock to all of us."

Haig, whose real name was Sidney Eddie Mosesian, worked for decades in the film industry, taking on character roles mostly in horror and exploitation films, including the 1974 Jack Hill-directed "Foxy Brown." Director Quentin Tarantino later cast Haig in his 1997 film "Jackie Brown," in a role written specifically for the actor, NBC News reported.

Haig was also a regular on popular TV series throughout the 1960s and '70s, including "Get Smart," "Charlie's Angels" and "The A-Team." The Fresno, California, native played drums for the 1950s group the T-Birds before working in film.

Later cast by Zombie as Captain Spaulding in the 2003 cult horror movie "House of 1,000 Corpses," Haig would return to the role in the 2005 sequel "The Devil's Rejects," alongside costars Sheri Moon Zombie and Bill Moseley. Haig also appears briefly in the third film of the series, "3 From Hell," which was released earlier this month.

Zombie posted a short message along with a photo of Haig to his own Instagram on Monday. "Horray for Captain Spaulding. Gone but not forgotten," Zombie wrote.

Haig representative Kathleen Schultz confirmed that he died Saturday after a recent fall in his home, the Associated Press reported.
