“End of an Era”: Last of Tijuana Drug Cartel Leaders Sentenced

The last of the four brothers who ran one of the world's most violent drug cartels from Tijuana, Mexico, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in San Diego Wednesday. Eduardo Arellano-Felix, 56, was the last of his brothers to be brought to justice, ending the Tijuana Cartel's two-decade reign, during which it trafficked hundreds of tons of cocaine and marijuana into the U.S. worth hundreds of millions of dollars, authorities said. The cartel terrorized the U.S. Southwest border with executions, kidnappings and tortures. The brothers were first indicted on drug charges in 1998. Authorities caught Arellano in October 2008 and he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money and conspiracy to use drug profits in May. His sentence marked "the end of an era in cartel history," William Sherman, special agent in charge of the DEA's San Diego office said.
