Fear for Departing Troops in Iraq

American military leaders fear for the safety of the troops that will be departing Iraq as the war winds down, especially after an attack in Baghdad Monday left six service members dead. The most dangerous areas might be a stretch of desert road that leads into Kuwait, as it makes the 46,000 remaining troops an easy target to insurgents, The New York Times reports. The military will look to prior strategies, such as 2006’s Awakening Movement, a tactic that gives tribal leaders throughout Iraq $10,000 a month for their aid and assistance. According to The Wall Street Journal, the State Department will spend around $3 billion in security force personnel to protect diplomats in Iraq after the last troops have left the country.
