Debris Flies Through Windshield, Kills Driver on 210 Freeway

This story was updated Thursday, March 15, 2018.

Authorities Thursday identified a 24-year-old driver who died when another motorist ran over metal debris, sending it crashing through the windshield of his vehicle on the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Duarte.

Stace Woodward, 24, of Eastvale died at the scene about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at Buena Vista Street, according to the coroner's office.

Woodward was driving a 2014 Volkswagen in the No. 4 lane when a tan pickup truck or SUV ahead of him in the No. 3 lane ran over and kicked up metal debris, the California Highway Patrol reported.

"The metal debris entered the Volkswagen through the windshield,'' striking Woodward, said CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez.

A 25-year-old Upland man riding with Woodward was not injured, Jimenez said.

"The passenger immediately took control of the Volkswagen and brought the vehicle to a stop at the Buena Vista Street off-ramp,'' Jimenez said.

"The passenger attempted first aid until (the) Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived.''

The No. 1 lane of the Buena Vista Street off-ramp was blocked for about three hours while the fatal crash was investigated and the scene was cleaned up, Jimenez said.

Investigators are hoping to locate the driver who ran over the debris.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Officer Kyle Croxford at the CHP's Baldwin Park Area Office, (626) 338-1164.
