An off-duty officer on his way to work struck a bicyclist near downtown Los Angeles Thursday morning, officials said.
The Los Angeles Police Department officer was driving on Washington Boulevard near Central Avenue when he hit the bicyclist after 6 a.m., police said.
Aerial video showed a bicycle on the ground with a bent wheel. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Police said the officer "is pretty rattled." It was not clear what vehicle the officer was driving.
Traffic investigators at the scene said they do not know in which direction the officer and bicycist were traveling, or if the bicyclist was wearing a helmet.
