A man died Monday evening after being struck by a car and then shot by California Highway Patrol officers on an Orange County freeway.
Rush hour drivers on the southbound 5 Freeway reported someone walking in traffic around 7 p.m., according to CHP.
"He ended up crossing into the southbound side where he was struck by a vehicle," CHP Officer Paul Fox told NBC4.
The shooting occurred on the 5 Freeway at the 133 interchange in Irvine, officials said.
Officers performed CPR on the man, but he later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Aerial footage from NewsChopper 4 showed a massive traffic back up while multiple agencies were on scene investigating the deadly shooting.
A SigAlert was issued for the area around 7:30 p.m. Traffic was diverted on the southbound 5 Freeway to the southbound 133 Freeway.

The SB 133 Freeway transition and all southbound 5 Freeway lanes were reopened at around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
There was no word as to why the officers resorted to using deadly force.
The officer in the shooting is on leave, according to CHP.
