Please… No Demonstrations During Urinal Tour

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was scheduled to tour a man's restroom in a Century City high-rise on Monday to promote city-supported water conservation methods adopted by the business community, including waterless urinals.

Villaraigosa and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power General Manager David Nahai will hold a news conference to discuss the "cost-effective and sustainable water conservation efforts being implemented in the city's commercial sector," said an LADWP statement.

The mayor will also tour an 11th floor restroom featuring waterless urinals, it said.

The event is being held at Watt Plaza Towers at 1875 Century Park East because the complex has installed 88 Falcon Brand waterfree urinals as part of the LADWP's water-efficient urinal program for commercial sectors, according to the city-owned utility.

It says Falcon has installed nearly 1,000 waterless urinals in Los Angeles in the past year, saving the city 39.5 million gallons of fresh water annually.

The DWP says that, to encourage the installation of waterless urinals, it provides rebates ranging from $200 to $500 per urinal, which, in some cases, can cover the entire cost.

The mayor in May unveiled a 20-year strategy that envisions meeting 100 percent of all new water demand through a combination of conservation and recycling.
